And this mornings movie... Pleasantville

I am really slipping into holiday mode here. I live in a house where everyone except me likes to sleep in. So here I am, on another peaceful quiet morning (well yes, except for Andy... who decided today would not be a sleep in day again, and he's out the back singing with his ipod) enjoying another thought provoking movie on Foxtel.

Pleasantville. I know Cleo and Lachie have watched it, but I have never sat down and watched it properly. It's about two kids, living in current times, who get swept into a tv show, through their tv, and end up living in Pleasantville. Where everything is black and white, and everyone is happy, all of the time. Everyday is the same. No one fights or even argues! The tv show is set in the 1940's or so.

The women aren't allowed to think. The husband walks in the door, says "honey I'm home" and walks into the kitchen to his smiling wife, who has lovingly prepared his dinner.

It's a weird one! But thought provoking yet again LOL At how much society has changed. I can't imagine being a wife back in those times! Haha I think Paul would probably faint if he walked in the door to a clean house, smiling wife, dinner cooked and kids waiting to see him with similing faces. Our reality is more like... Paul comes home, I'm still sitting with my laptop playing on facebook, I've thought about cleaning up the kitchen from breakfast, (but come to the conclusion that what's the point cos the kids are only gonna trash it again) dogs hungry, cats are hungry, cleos in her room napping or msning, Lachie is glued to a basketball match on the tv, Andy is shouting at the playstation or anyone or anything else that is annoying him, and I have no idea what we are gonna eat for dinner HAHAHA.

That's my Pleasantville!

At first sight...

I was up early this morning... haha well, yes, I am up early every morning! by choice. I watched this movie on Foxtel called At First Sight. It was about a blind guy, who got his sight back via an operation, and was based on a true story. I couldn't help but draw parallels to the thought of Andy not having DS. I missed the first 20 minutes or so of the movie, so not sure how the story started out. But basically he had a girlfriend, she was with him when he went for the surgery that would possibly restore his sight. It did.

His reaction to becoming a sighted person left me with soooooo many thoughts! He couldn't cope. He was a 25 year old man, and had been blind since birth. He had no perception of facial expressions or emotion. He couldn't read. He walked into mirrors. He experienced jealousy (cos he could see it) He went to a party and everyone started dancing Y.M.C.A. ... he couldn't do it, cos of course he had never seen it before. Looking at tall buildings gave him vertigo. He still needed to touch food to realise what it was. He was served up a crayfish, and was astounded that people actually ate something that looked like that.

Then there was his partner... Her original expectations became obvious as the story went on. She obviously thought that gaining sight would improve his quality of life. That the fact he was blind meant he was missing out on so much. Of course she had no idea of the hurdles he would encounter transferring from being blind to being sighted. She couldn't cope either... with the fact that gaining sight didn't automatically turn him into a sighted person! He could "see" but he also coudn't "see" He really didn't know how to use his sight.

And then my mind started ticking over... I have had the discussion, and read a few discussions on whether I would take the DS out of Andy if I could. I have always said no, I wouldn't, because Andy is who he is, and we love him just as he is. Although, I will concede that that doesn't mean the thought hasn't crossed my mind as to whether he would have a better life if he didn't have DS. I watched the whole movie, with DS in my mind, and how many of us must think about the quality of life that our kids have, and whether their lives would be enhanced if they didn't have DS. And at the conclusion of the movie, I am at peace in my mind that Andy is Andy, and taking away the DS would quite possibly, as it did for this man, make his life so complicated that we would wish he had it back!

What would life be like for Andy if he didn't have DS? Would it automatically make him a super sports star? Would he stop having anger management issues ( haha that is a slight exaggeration, but I like the term...) would he be "smart" ? His 18 year old sister still has trouble reading a clock, so would taking away his DS mean that he would be able to tell the time? Would society think any different of him? He would still look the same... How would his personality change? Would he actually WANT to learn all the stuff that his intellect had previously prohibited him from learning? The quesitons are endless really.

In the end, the mans eye disease returned, only 5 weeks after he became sighted. It was like he was releived that it was happening. He had quality of life. He was happy. It was the society around him that thought that having sight would make him a happier person.

Oh, and then there was his mum, who had been his primary carer. When he woke up from surgery, sighted, he no longer needed her. He no longer needed the safe haven that had been his home forever, cos of course he could see now, so he could live anywhere. He moved in with his girlfriend. His mother was devastated. She went overnight from having a son who needed her assistance on a daily basis, to him not really needing her at all! And I could see myself in her! Imagine waking up tomorrow and not needing to do anything for Andy, ever again!!! Whilst that is a scenario that I sometimes crave, the reality would be, that it would knock you for six!

Food for thought hey...

I'm in !!!

I'm back in !!! Yes, after many many attempts, I have finally remembered the right email and password combination to get back into my blog. And yes Di, you have inspired me to keep blogging, and hopefully more regularly. I just need to make time to do it !

I'm sure this is all bought on by menopause brain. My memory is shot! Well I guess add to that a hectic year, which for the most part is over. Thank goodness!

The house of Bugg is in a much relaxed state right now. Cleo has finished her VCE. In all honesty I never thought she would complete it. So I am very proud of her for seeing it through. It has been a looooooooong road. After sucumbing to the anxiety gene, (during year 9) that seems to run in the family (thanks Nana, and Great Nana, and probably Great Great Nana) Cleo has done an amazing job to get her life together and continue to go to school. Add to that a toxic boyfriend, who we ditched about a year ago (That was a major accomplishment in all our lives haha) and then the poor kid thinks she's with the love of her life, and that ended with an almighty thump days after her 18th Birthday. And still with all of this, she managed to stick it out and PASS.

So we are rejoicing in the relaxed atmosphere of no commitments LOL She doesn't have a job, well she has a casual job at her beloved Nash Hotel, so that's cool. I am really a big beleiver in that they need some chill time after all these years of school. I am on her back to get a job, but the reality is that I am okay with her chilling for a few months. (Just wont tell her that hehe)
Haha yes!!! She PASSED. I am still amazed by it, and so very proud of her.

I haven't had to wake her to get out of bed for several weeks now, and you have no idea how that has affected me HAHA in a good way!!! It is soooooo less stressful to know that how she fills in her day is her concern and not mine. I don't care if she sleeps all day LOL And I have already delighted myself on a couple of occassions where she has slept and not woken herself up to attend some social function, to be able to say when she gets up and has a little hissy fit... It's up to you luv :) you want to do these things, organise your time hehehe.

That's probably enough wafflilng for one day.

I will add that I am seriously suffering the effects of menopause. Hot flushes are the absolute pits! I am constantly tired and fell like someone is standing me in front of a fire about 3 or 4 times an hour. I'm off to the GP in the next few days, and am considering having a go at HRT just to give myself a break.
